What will you see at Little Explorers?
Being an Early Childhood professional for the past 20 years and a huge play advocate, you will see many opportunities for your child to explore and play out in a calming environment, nature. That might look like mess to you, it might not look pretty, or perfectly cut out by an adult, but trust me it will be age & developmentally appropriate for your child and all based on best practice and research. You will always see books and writing materials and this supports early literacy and mark making, as well as fine motor and social skills. You will see sensory activities, that might be a messy play activity, water play or a nature craft. This supports your child’s over all developmental and their ability to develop curiosity and imagination of their world. You will see other like minded families supporting their child during their play and following their lead. You will see nature immersion with mud and nature walks and concepts discussed. However, you will not see any perfectly cut out pictures or crafts that your child is having to sit down and complete. But why? These are pretty! Well that is open for discussion, ask yourself who is the craft for? Is it benefiting the child or the adult? If it’s a product art (where it has to look pretty & all be a certain way and look the same in the same colour), then it’s only benefiting the adult. If it’s process art (the act of doing with no particular outcome), then it benefits the child and their imagination, independence and needs. All Early Childhood educators value process art and we do too! We value the child and their ability to learn at their own pace and we value where they are in their own developmental milestones. We love our Little Explorers and being involved in their learning journey is something pretty amazing! We also love puddles!
